Many people keeps asking me questions that could be solved simply installing some adequate pieces of software, that would also increase a lot the "enjoyability" of your surf! Here's a list of programs i suggest, for each common problem. As usual for a new page just created, it lacks many programs, and there will be surely errors. Please mail me your comments/suggestions!
Site downloaders:
Spiders of all sort, the electronic one (those can't ethere ar crushed!). Basically it's a program that, given the homepage of a site, scans the whole site and downloads it for you on your hard drive. I've tried a few, for pictures a great program is PicaLoader, it will get all pics of your favourite site automatically and browse them easily. Definetely worth a try!
Download errors:
They're unavoidable. It happens often that, while downloading a pic or a file, the connection broke up, leaving you with a half-pic or - worse - a useless piece of file. The solution is a program that can resume broken connections from the broken point. In this case i recommend either to get and install Get right or Go'zilla, or to use a browser that has an integrated download manager, like Netscape or Mozilla.
Internet browsers:
Microsotf aggressive policy succeded in conquiring 90% of browser market with their Internet Explorer. They bought Netscape and closed its browser. This doesn't mean IE is the best browser around. Try Mozilla, Opera or Firebird and you will understand what i mean!
Picture viewers:
Pics are fundamental in my site. Viewing them enjoying them it's not so easy. You can use all the programs you want, but if you seek my opinion, i'd recommend you to use ACDsee, surely the best viewer today.
E-mail client:
Windows rules (by fact, as Linux is better ;-), and Windows users almost always use Outlook, the Microsoft built-in e-mail program. But Outlook is buggy and contributed spreading viruses all around the internet. If you really have to use Outlook, please at least make sure all latest patches and updates are applied. Prefer Outlook to the lite edition (Outlook Express) if possible.
I'd also suggest you to give a try to other mail clients. Personally, i'm stuck to Eudora since the first versions, but there are so many.... Gits always reccomends me The Bat!
